Online Maps Portal of Survey of India

Background

Survey of India, the National Mapping Agency to Government of India under Department of Science & Technology bears a special responsibility to ensure that the country's domain is explored and mapped suitably, provide base maps for expeditious and integrated development and ensure that all resources contribute with their full measure to the progress, prosperity and security of our country now and for the generations to come.

The Govt of India in Feb 2021 announced radical changes to mapping policy of India. It has announced a new Geospatial policy to unlock altogether new avenues for business, private sector and research institutes to build applications and drive innovation in creation of digital public goods similar to Aadhar, UPI etc.

Start-ups and entrepreneurs in consumers tech / e-commerce sector can build their own maps, decision support systems and approve location based services. Apart from startups, traditional sectors like Agriculture, Defense, Mining, Oil and Gas will benefit tremendously and this will create massive employment opportunities for the country.

Government of India has come up with following major policies/guidelines in Geospatial domain

• Guidelines for acquiring and producing Geospatial Data and Geospatial Data Services including Maps
• National Map Policy 2005
• National Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy (NDSAP - 2012)

What can be accessed in Online Maps portal?

• Topographical Map Full Sheet

This Dataset is of Open Series Maps on scale 1:250K. These Maps Contain all the Topographic Layers like Adm Boundaries, Communications (Roads and Railways), Hydrology, Hypsography and Vegetation. OSMs are on UTM Projection and WGS 84 datum. These maps are made available for free download from SOI portal.

• Topographical Map Full Sheet – Scale 1: 50K

This Dataset is of Open Series Map on scale 1:50K These Maps Contain all the Topographic Layers like Adm Boundaries, Communications (Roads and Railways), Hydrology, Hypsography and Vegetation. OSMs are on UTM Projection and WGS 84 datum.

• Digital Vector Database Entire Country - Scale 1:1M - This dataset is a database of Administrative boundaries, Drainage, Transportation Layers (Roads and Railways) and Population Centres of entire Country.
• Digital vector Database Small State- Scale 1:1M - This dataset is a database of Administrative boundaries, Drainage, Transportation Layers (Roads and Railways) and Population Centres of a Small State.

How to download maps ?

• Visit the Online Maps portal
• Register in the portal - Steps for User Registration
  • Individual / Private Organisation
    • Prerequisites : User Mobile Number, User Email ID (To provide latest information about products and orders)
    • Step 1 - Enter Mobile Number of User, OTP, Verify OTP received on mobile number
    • Step 2- Enter valid Email ID of User
    • Step 3 - Get User ID and Temporary Password by SMS and Email
  • Govt Organisation
    • Prerequisites :
      • Mobile Nos of authorized Govt official and Approving authority (HoD etc).
      • Official email Ids (@gov.in or @nic.in) of authorized Govt official and Approving authority (HoD etc). To avail the service, offices of Govt(Centre/State) need to have valid govt mail account(gov.in/nic.in) along with the Kavach Authentication System. Click to get email.
    • Step 1 - Enter Mobile Number of User (Authorised Govt official), OTP, Verify OTP received on mobile number
    • Step 2 - Enter official Email ID of User (Authorised Govt official), Verify OTP received by e-mail
    • Step 3 - Get User ID and Temporary Password by SMS and Email
