The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta, RIFA) is a globally invasive species that is notable for its complex colony structure, biological traits, and behavioral characteristics. Native to South America, it has rapidly spread across the United States, Mexico, China, and Australia, and most recently, it was confirmed to have established a foothold in Europe (Sicily, Italy) as of late 2023. The primary route of entry for these ants is through global trade, particularly in infested soil, nursery plants, compost, mulch, sand, gravel, rubbish machinery, vehicles, hay and shipping containers. Therefore, a stringent quarantine inspection is needed during importation of potted plants or landscaping materials in order to check for hidden ant colonies. Brief description of RIFA The Red Imported Fire Ant (RIFA) has a copper brown head and darker, reddish-brown body. The average worker ant reaches 2-6mm in length and it has strong mandibles with 4-5 distinct teeth. It has a distinguishing 2-part pedicel and its body is covered in numerous erect hairs. Typically, they build their nest underground in mounds. The mounds are found in lawns, parks, agricultural fields, disrupting turf, etc. and have no obvious opening at the top. The RIFA is often discovered when someone inadvertently steps on a mound and they launch an attack. It should not be confused with tropical fire ant (Solenopsis geminata) or native weaver ants (Oecophylla smaragdina). Harmful effect of RIFA The potential harmful effects of RIFA are as follows. As an invasive species, cause disruptions in the existing ecosytem through competition with native species for food and shelter and also prey on native animals. They spread quickly, which makes them difficult to control. Damage agricultural crops like sorghum, vegetables, small grains and affect their growth through poor germination and reduced yields Sting and swarm livestock, resulting in reduced milk production, weight loss, and death in severe cases.
