Coconut being the main crop and livelihood of the people of Lakshadweep, the scheme is very relevant to Lakshadweep. The emphasis under this scheme is for coconut crop husbandry, coconut value addition, assistance to coconut climbers. Expansion of Coconut area The financial assistance to a tune of Rs. 56,000 per ha is extended in two equal annual installments for planting coconut seedlings in new area. The subsidy is extended for a maximum of 2 ha and minimum area of 0.08 ha (20 cents) per beneficiary in two equal annual installments. Productivity improvement through Coconut Based Cropping System (PICCS) The scheme seeks to improve the production and productivity of coconut holdings through integrated farming practices, including coconut-based cropping systems. Productivity Improvement Through Coconut-Based Cropping System (PICCS)is a major component under this comprehensive programme. It is implemented on a cluster basis through the Departments of Agriculture/Horticulture of the concerned State Governments, as well as directly by the Coconut Development Board. Subsidy is provided at 100 percent of the cost, amounting to ₹42,000 per hectare, limited to 2 hectares per beneficiary. It is released in two equal annual instalments. For community-based water harvesting structures The cost norms are set at Rs. 30.00 lakh per unit (Rs. 100 per cubic metre) for Lakshadweep Islands. For individual farmers - water harvesting structures in coconut gardens Assistance is available for the construction of on-farm ponds and tanks with plastic or RCC lining as per ‗Per Drop More Crop‘ (PDMC) norms. Farmers can receive 50% of the construction cost (Rs.125 per cubic metre in plain areas, limited to Rs.75,000 and Rs.90,000, respectively. Smaller units will receive pro-rata support. Replanting and Rejuvenation of Coconut Gardens The scheme aims to enhance coconut production and productivity by replacing disease-affected, unproductive, old, and senile palms with quality seedlings. It also focuses on rejuvenating the remaining palms through an integrated package of practices. The scheme is implemented on a project-by-project basis, addressing state-specific problems. Assistance up to ₹54,000 per hectare is provided over two years. Insurance and accident relief to coconut climbers (all islands) Kera Suraksha Insurance Scheme: Provides accident insurance coverage to coconut tree climbers, Neera Technicians, Hybridization Workers, and coconut labourers engaged in the coconut sector. Neera Tapping Programme (all islands) Description of the Component: Neera or toddy is obtained by tapping the unopened spadix of coconut. Natural vinegar, jaggeryetc are made from neera. Neera tapping reduces pest attack; generate revenue and livelihood for people. Neera Tappers are engaged from Village (Dweep) Panchayath and paid an amount of Rs. 275+DA. Under this scheme so many farmers are engaged in production of Natural Vinegar, Jaggery etc as source of their livelihood. Coconut Harvesting for Dept Palms (Androth, Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy) Description of the Component: The Department has got more than 800 Coconut palms.
