BharatGen was born out of a vision to create a future where cutting-edge artificial intelligence, deeply rooted in India’s values, culture, history, languages, and heritage, empowers every Indian to connect, communicate, and innovate effortlessly. BharatGen officially launched in October 2024. As a fully government-funded initiative under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), BharatGen is driving the creation of an inclusive and open AI ecosystem in India, aligned with nation's vison for the development of Multilingual Large Language Model of India. Our mission is to develop and deploy advanced AI solutions, grounded in India’s languages and cultural context, to create intuitive and accessible technology that empowers all Indians to safely connect, communicate, and build a brighter future. Leading Initiatives Bharat Data Sagar: The World’s Largest Indian Data Repository. BharatGen is building the world’s largest dataset of its kind, focusing on underrepresented Indian data—text, speech, and images tied to languages, culture, history, and philosophy. AI Models and Benchmarks: Pioneering AI for India. BharatGen is developing state-of-the-art AI models for conversational AI, automatic speech recognition (ASR), text-to-speech (TTS), translation, and more, tailored to Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) and cultural perspectives. Upskilling India: Building the AI Talent Pipeline. BharatGen is investing in India’s future by funding MTech/PhD researchers, launching AI courses, and hosting hackathons and workshops—aiming to make India a global AI leader, not just a consumer. Ecosystem and Applications: Co-Creating Impact with Partners. BharatGen is building an ecosystem of partners—startups, system integrators, government agencies, and VCs—to co-create AI applications for good governance, defense, agriculture, and commercial use. BharatGen Open Source: Sharing Knowledge for a Sustainable Future. BharatGen will release a subset of models, weights, recipes, and data as open source, starting with text and TTS models in 2025, while selectively sharing advanced resources with government and trusted partners.
