Excavations at Pilak, Tirupura The ancient mound locally known as Thakurani Tila is located in Paschim Pilak in South Tripura district. Excavations conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1998-2001 at this site have brought to light the brick-built basement of nine shrines, of which two are rectangular in plan and the remaining seven are square. The presence of a quartz shivalinga fixed in a stone yonipitha within one of the shrines indicates that the shrine was dedicated to Shiva. The site has also yielded an image of Mahisasurmardini Durga and a colossal standing image of Surya holding lotuses. The excavated remains from the mound can be assigned to circa 10th-13th century CE. Source: Archaeological Survey of India
