Excavations at Taranga, Mehsana, Gujarat Exploration and excavation at Taranga, near Taran Dharan Mata Temple of Mehsana district, revealed Taranga as one of the largest Buddhist establishments of western India from the 4th-5th centuries onwards. Work carried out on the hillocks of Samasidor, Dhagolia, and Jogida recorded 14 stone platforms showing terraced systems, 51 rock shelters converted into dwellings, two prayer halls from different phases, stone steps, checkdams on a seasonal rivulet, a brick structure resembling a vihara and 40 votive stupas on the peak of Dhagolia hill. Excavated areas on the western side of the temple and nearby locations have been refilled with soil for protection. The stupa on Dhagolia hill was conserved at its damaged base. Most remains lie within forest land and are naturally protected from vandalism. Source: Archaeological Survey of India
