Hemis Monastery Hemis Monastery is located on a hillock about 45 km from Leh town on the left bank of the Indus River in Leh District, Union Territory of Ladakh. It is one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh. The monastery is the headquarters of the Drukpa Kargyud sect in Ladakh. It is famous for displaying the giant Thangka of Guru Padmasambhava during the Hemis Tsechu festival, held once every twelve years on the 10th day of the fifth month of the monkey year in the Tibetan calendar. The monastery complex is built using stone and mud brick masonry with mud-plastered exterior walls. Hemis monastery was founded in the 17th century CE by Venerable Lama Stagsang Raspa, invited by King Sengge Namgyal after his travels to India, Odiyana and Kashmir and his vision of the eighty Mahasiddhas.
