Merchant Navy in India The Directorate General of Maritime Administration is an attached office under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India. Indian Maritime University The Indian Maritime University (IMU), headquartered in Chennai, was established on 14th November 2008 as a teaching-cum-affiliating university under the aegis of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Government of India. It was set up to promote maritime studies, training, research and extension with focus on emerging areas like oceanography, maritime history, maritime laws, maritime security, search and rescue, transportation of dangerous cargo, environmental studies and other related fields, and to achieve excellence in these areas. IMU conducts the Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) every year on All India basis for admissions to its Programmes for IMU campuses, Affiliated Institutes and Non-Affiliated Institutes with IMU. As per DGS Training Circular 12 of 2020, dated 01.04.2020, all Maritime Training Institutes [MTIs] regulated by DG Shipping are required to admit candidates on the basis of IMU-CET ranking and as amended from time to time. IMU-CET is mandatory for admission to Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) approved Programmes. Hence Candidates seeking admission in Pre-Sea Courses Diploma in Nautical Science, B.Sc. (Nautical -Science) and B.E / B.Tech. (Marine Engineering) to any MTI (Govt. or Private- Affiliated to any University) are required to qualify in IMU-CET.
