Hindi Diwas is being celebrated across the country on September 14. Introduction On September 14, 1949, the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, as the official language of the country. The Article 343 of the Constitution provides for Hindi in Devanagari script as the Official Language of the Union, while Article 351 places upon the Union the responsibility for the promotion, development and enrichment of Hindi. Today, Hindi is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and is the first language of over 520 million people. Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs anchors the celebration of Hindi Diwas across the country. Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs With a view to ensuring compliance of the constitutional and legal provisions regarding Official Language and to promote the use of Hindi for the official purposes of the Union, the Department of Official Language was set up on 26 June 1975 as an independent Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Since then, this Department has been making efforts for accelerating the progressive use of Hindi for the official purposes of the Union. In accordance with the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961, this Department has been entrusted with the following items of work: Implementing the provisions of the Constitution relating to the Official Language and the provisions of the Official Languages Act, 1963 (19 of 1963), except to the extent such implementation has been assigned to any other Department. Prior approval of the President for authorising the limited use of a language, other than English, in the proceedings in the High Court of a State. Nodal responsibility for all matters relating to the progressive use of Hindi as the Official Language of the Union including Hindi Teaching Scheme for Central Government Employees and publication of magazines, journals & other literature related thereto. Co-ordination in all matters relating to the progressive use of Hindi as the Official Language of the Union, including administrative terminology, syllabi, textbooks, training courses and equipment (with standardised script) required therefor. Constitution and cadre-management of the Central Secretariat Official Language Service. Matters relating to the Kendriya Hindi Samiti. Co-ordination of work relating to the Hindi Salahkar Samiti set up by various Ministries/Departments. Matters relating to the Central Translation Bureau. Matters relating to the Central Hindi Training Institute including Hindi Teaching Scheme. Matters relating to the Regional Implementation Offices. Matters relating to the Committee of Parliament on Official Language. To make arrangements for training in Hindi language, Hindi typing and Hindi shorthand for the employees of State Governments including autonomous and Local Self-Government Institutions on demand basis. Hindi Diwas 2026 Hindi Diwas 2026 and the Sixth All India Official Language Conference is being held during September 14-15, 2026 at CIDCO Exhibition Centre, Gate No.1, Vashi, Navi Mumbai-400703. The two-day conference will bring together scholars, litterateurs, academics, parliamentarians, senior government officials, and prominent figures from various fields to discuss how to develop Hindi as an official language, a common language, and a link language, as well as how to enhance its synergy with other Indian languages. The event proves to be an important platform for increasing awareness about the Official Language Policy, provide an opportunity to further strengthen coordination, dialogue and partnership among all Indian languages along with Hindi. On this occasion, Rajbhasha Kirti Awards and Rajbhasha Gaurav Awards are presented to Ministries, Departments, Banks, Public Sector Undertakings and writers & litterateurs for their outstanding work in the field of implementation of Official Language.
