Kala Utsav is an initiative of the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, Government of India. It was launched in 2015 to promote arts in education by nurturing and showcasing the artistic talent of school students in the country. Background The initiative is being organised to promote arts in education by nurturing and showcasing the artistic talent of school students at the secondary stage in the country. Kala Utsav is envisaged as a fully integrated platform to mainstream students from all the sections of the society and give them a platform to showcase their talents and abilities. It provides an equal opportunity and favourable environment to nurture and showcase the talents of students in an all-inclusive set up and helps in making learning more expressive, creative and joyful. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasises on the promotion of arts and culture through education. Though India has a long tradition of art and artistic practices, a uniform process of identifying artistic talents in school education is yet to be developed. We also have a tradition of using arts in the process of learning: the narrative tradition is one such example. These traditions also show us the creative expansion from the individual to the community, which contributes towards the overall development of society.
