Ministry of Ayush and Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has formulated regulations of safety and quality standards for food products under ‘Ayurveda Aahara’ category. Ayurveda Aahara refers to food products developed in line with the holistic dietary principles of Ayurveda, one of the world's oldest systems of health and wellness. These preparations emphasise balance, seasonal suitability, and using natural ingredients and herbs known for their therapeutic benefits. With rising public interest in preventive health and sustainable living, Ayurveda Aahara is increasingly recognised as a trusted nutritional choice that harmonises tradition with modern dietary habits. Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations (2022) FSSAI published the Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations (2022) in the Gazette of India on May 6, 2022. The implementation date for the regulations is May 5, 2022. The regulations relate to Ayurveda Aahara, and covers food prepared in accordance with the recipes or ingredients and/or processes as per methods described in the authoritative books of Ayurveda listed under ‘Schedule A’ of the regulations. According to the regulations, all food prepared in accordance with the recipes/ingredients/processes described in the authoritative books of Ayurveda will be considered as “Ayurveda Aahara”. Food recipes and ingredients for promoting health, specific physiological needs, and foods specified for consumption during or post specified diseases, disorders referred as Pathya in Ayurved are covered under these regulations. The Schedule B of the Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations, 2022 specifies that the Food Authority may provide a list of Ayurveda Aahara covered under category A from time to time. List of Ayurveda Aahara covered In consultation with Ministry of Ayush, FSSAI has provided providing Ayurveda Aahara covered under category A under the Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations, 2022 for facilitating Food Business Operators (FBOs) for manufacturing of Ayurveda Aahara. Further, in case of Ayurveda Aahara products falling under category A, but not mentioned in the list, Food Business Operator shall request the Food Authority for inclusion by submitting relevant literature from Authoritative text listed under Schedule A books.
