To identify if a person is suffering from addiction, one needs to be aware of the signs and symptoms to help those in need. The following are the physical and behavioural symptoms that can be notices in addicts. Physical Symptoms Inability to sleep leading to insomnia in extreme cases. Loss of, or increase in, appetite. Unusual smell from clothes or individuals, especially breath. Staggering due to poor loco-motor coordination. Feeling lethargic. Bloodshot or glazed eyes. Extreme hyperactivity, Irregular heartbeat. Nausea, vomiting or excessive sweating Running nose or cough. Frequently rubbing nose or twisting jaw back and forth Sense of hygiene is poor and physical health diminishes Puffiness with redness/paleness of face may also be seen Complaints of sore jaw (from teeth grinding during an ecstasy high) Behavioural Symptoms Change in overall personality/attitude with no other identifiable cause. Low performance in school/work, skipping or being late to daily events. Change in hobbies or activities Depression Unexplained need for money, stealing Increased anger or irritability Paranoia Difficulty concentrating or forgetfulness Excessive need for privacy Disinterested attitude Lack of motivation, energy, or self-esteem, general fatigue Secretive or suspicious behavior Source : Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment
