Nutritional Security through Backyard Layer Poultry Farming

Introduction

• In Longleng district, majority of the farmer rear indigenous poultry birds only due to non-availability of improved varieties of chicks in the market.
• Longleng district enjoys monsoon type of climate with a minimum temperature of 10° C in winter and a maximum of 28° C in summer.
• The weather is well suited for rearing improved varieties of poultry birds in the district.

KVK Interventions

• Taking into consideration the potential of poultry rearing in Longleng district, KVK conducted training programme on poultry farming management during the month of May 2019.
• Interested farmers were selected for rearing Srinidhi chicks at backyard. Inputs like day old chicks, medicines and feed materials were distributed to the trainees.
• The chicks were vaccinated as per schedule.
• Among trainees, Ms. Chupen Phom was more interested in rearing Srinidhi chicks for egg production.

Economic Analysis

• Critical inputs like 100 numbers of Day old chicks, feeder, drinker, antibiotic powder, liquid vitamin supplements were provided. y The overall survival rate was 92 per cent up to 20th week.
• The average body weight at 4th week was recorded 485±150 g per bird that increased up to 3095± 61.9g at 20th week.
• The poultry birds was reared up to 32 weeks only.
• Commercial ration were given with additional supplement of feeds like maize, paddy grains and green leafy vegetables.
• The income was mainly from the sale of live birds and eggs at the rate of Rs.350 per kg and Rs. 8 per piece respectively.
• The net return from the sale of culled live birds and eggs is Rs.91640 with B:C ratio of 1:1:66.

Marketing

The culled birds and eggs were sold within the village and in local market.

Impact/Horizontal Spread of Technology

The meat and egg of Srinidhi bird were highly accepted by the public and her success has motivated the fellow villagers especially the women folk to rear poultry as a means of nutritional security and income generation.
