IISER Admissions

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs)

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) was established by the Government of India at Berhampur, Bhopal, Kolkata, Mohali, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram, and Tirupati to integrate and promote interdisciplinary science education and research. Over the years, the IISERs have been successfully attracting talented young minds. An overarching goal of the IISERs is to enable students to shape the nation by inventing and implementing sustainable solutions for societal problems through research in science. This is being achieved by our faculty of international repute together with bright students. In a short span of time, the IISERs have generated an incredible amount of intellectual property in the form of publications and patents.

Key Features

  • Highly competent and motivated faculty with a passion for teaching and pursuing research in frontier areas of science.
  • Integrated undergraduate teaching and cutting-edge research.
  • Exposure and access to world-class research facilities right from the start of the program.
  • Research internships and year-long research projects leading to MS thesis with opportunities for interdisciplinary research.

Academic Programs

IISERs offer admission into courses leading to BS-MS Dual Degree, and BS Degree (only at IISER Bhopal) Programs.

  • Biological Sciences
  • Chemical Sciences
  • Earth & Climate Sciences/Earth & Environmental Sciences
  • Economic Sciences
  • Engineering Sciences (Chemical Engineering, Data Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science)
    Geological Sciences
  • Integrated & Interdisciplinary Sciences (Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Data Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences)
  • Mathematical Sciences
  • Physical Sciences

Note: Four-year BS program in Engineering Sciences and Economics Sciences is offered only by IISER Bhopal.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be Indian nationals or PIO or OCI in order to apply through KVPY or JEE (Advanced) or IAT channels. Candidates who are NOT Indian nationals or PIO or OCI can apply for admission only through the JEE (Advanced) channel.
  • Candidates must have passed Class XII (or equivalent) exam with science stream in 2022 or 2023 from any board recognized by the Council of Boards of School Education in India COBSE.
  • Candidates must have taken at least three subjects among Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics during their Class XII (or equivalent) exam.
  • Candidates belonging to SC/ST/PwD should have scored a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade in their Class XII (or equivalent) exam. Candidates belonging to other categories should have scored a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade in their Class XII (or equivalent) exam.
Students must have at least one of the two subjects, Mathematics and Biology at the class XII level. The questions in the IAT will be from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics with equal weightage. There are no subject-specific cut-off marks, though.

Admission Channels

The following are the three channels for admission into IISERs:

  • Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) Channel
  • Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) of the Indian Institutes of Technology Channel
  • IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) Channel

A candidate can apply through any one or two or all three channels, provided they satisfy the overall eligibility conditions and specific eligibility conditions for those channels.

  • IAT Channel
    • Candidates seeking admission through this channel must appear for a computer-based IISER Aptitude Test(IAT-2023).
    • IAT-2023 will be conducted on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 9:00 AM, at various centres across the country.
  • KVPY Channel
    • The KVPY-SA students who have received the provisional KVPY fellowship award are eligible to apply for admissions.
    • Candidates in the extended KVPY merit list are not eligible.
    • Candidates seeking admission under this channel do not have to appear for IAT.
  • JEE Channel
    • Candidates seeking admission under JEE channel should have qualified in the JEE (Advanced) in the current year and should have a rank within 15000 in the common rank list or in the respective category rank lists (GEN-EWS/OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD).
    • Those who qualified JEE (Advanced) in any year other than the current year are not eligible.
    • Candidates with JEE (Advanced) preparatory ranks are not eligible.
    • Candidates seeking admission under this channel do not have to appear for IAT.

IISER Aptitude Test (IAT)

IAT will be generally be held during mid June. During 2023, it was held on June 17, 2023. IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) will be conducted as a computer-based test in centres across India. IAT will consist of 60 questions, 15 questions each from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. The total time for answering the test will be 180 minutes. Questions will be of multiple choice type with only one correct answer.
  • Each correct answer will be awarded 4 marks.
  • Each incorrect answer will lead to the deduction of 1 mark.
  • Unanswered questions will be awarded 0 mark.
  • Therefore, the maximum marks in IAT will be 240.
  • The total marks obtained by a candidate out of 240 will be considered for preparing the Rank List.

Not every candidate appearing in IAT 2023 will be awarded a rank. Rank cut-off will be announced at an appropriate time. Further, getting a rank does not guarantee offer/admission to an IISER.

IAT for Other Institutes

The following institutions use IAT for admitting students to their programs:

Bachelor of Science (Research) program of Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore
BS Medical Sciences and Engineering program of Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM)

Students who wish to apply to any of the above programs (IISc, IITM) MUST complete BOTH Step 1 and Step 2 detailed below.

Step 1: Apply to IAT on the IISER admission portal (www.iiseradmission.in).
Step 2: Fill up the application form on the admission portal of IISc AND/OR IITM as applicable.

Students wishing to apply for the programs listed above MUST apply to BOTH IAT AND the said program SEPARATELY.
