FutureSkills Prime, launched in 2018, is a joint initiative by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) and the IT Industry led by NASSCOM. The program is being extended under the GoI's flagship Champion Service Sector (CSS) Scheme.
FutureSkills Prime is a skilling ecosystem focused on emerging technologies, powered by a partnership between MeitY, NASSCOM, and the IT industry. It seeks to propel India to become a global hub of talent in emerging technologies.
Research indicates that 50% of the 4 million employees of the IT industry need to be reskilled over the next 3 years. In addition, digital disruption is transforming every industry. Through this initiative, the Government and industry aim to reskill/upskill a total of about 1.4 million employees over a period of 5 years (1 million from company supported (B2B) skilling and another 0.4 million from this Government supported/facilitated (B2C) scheme). FutureSkills Prime is one of the lighthouse schemes under the Government’s Trillion Dollar Digital Economy initiative.
The platform would provide interested candidates with multiple options for their skilling needs. Through this platform, learners can exit at multiple points in their learning journey. They can earn badges for digital fluency, earn certificates from courses aligned to the government-approved curriculum, go through blended learning from key program partners like CDAC/NIELIT and complete bridge and foundations course.
The Union Cabinet had approved the proposal of the Department of Commerce to give focussed attention to twelve identified Champion Services Sectors for promoting their development and realising their potential. IT and ITeS Services is one of the identified champion service sectors under the umbrella scheme titled Champion Service Sector Scheme (‘CSSS’). The scheme would be jointly implemented by MeitY and NASSCOM.
Foundation Courses
Foundation courses are aligned to Industry and IT-ITeS Sector Skills Council NASSCOM (SSC NASSCOM) recommended curricula. Foundation course curricula as defined by SSC NASSCOM and Industry are approved by the IT line Ministry MeitY. These curricula were finally approved by NSQC at NSQF Level 4. These courses cover the key concepts of technology. The typical duration of these courses is 40-60 hrs and includes both the theoretical and practical components.
Bridge Courses
Bridge courses will be offered in blended mode by CDAC/NIELT and will provide fundamental insight into the future course a learner joins. Apart from providing an introductory exposure, the learner will learn about various tools, programming platforms, hardware etc. that are part of the respective future technology. Application-specific career opportunities for respective future technology would also be covered as part of bridge programs.
Collaborative Deep Skilling
These courses are aligned to industry recommended and Government approved competency standards. Competency standards specify the performance, knowledge and understanding of a job role related task/NOS. Each NOS (aka Competency Standard) is NSQF aligned. NSQF aligned deep skill course curricula as defined by SSC NASSCOM and Industry are approved by the IT line Ministry MeitY and these curricula are then approved by NSQC.
Training of Government Officials (B2G)
It is essential for the Central/State Government, PSUs, and autonomous organisations involved in IT/ITeS and related areas to keep abreast with the emerging technologies and get the internal technical manpower trained. Such training requirements would span across various aspects involving capabilities, platforms, services, tools, etc. in future technologies. NIELIT/CDAC would undertake the pan-India training of government officials.
Training of Trainers
The CDAC/NIELIT resource centres and SSC NASSCOM will train faculty spread across the country. FutureSkills Prime envisages providing uniform training and technical exposure to all trainers who are part of this initiative.
