Indian Academy of Sciences

The Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS)

The Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) Bangalore was founded on 27 April 1934 by Sir C V Raman and registered as a society with the aim of promoting the progress and upholding the cause of science, in both pure and applied branches.

The Academy began functioning with 65 Founding Fellows and the formal inauguration took place at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

Activities of IAS

The Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) Bangalore disseminates scientific knowledge to the community via meetings, discussions, seminars, symposia and publications.

  • Annual Meetings : The Fellowship meets twice each year. The mid-year meeting (two days in early July) is held in Bangalore, while the location of the Annual meeting of the Academy (three days around the 7th of November) changes each year. During these meetings, there are symposia on special topics as well as scientific and popular lectures.
  • Discussion Meetings : Academy supports discussion meetings of small groups of scientists from within India and outside organized by a Fellow at a venue of the Fellow's choice. Travel support is not available for attendees from outside the country. A special venue is Orange County resort in the picturesque hill district of Kodagu near Bengaluru, where Academy has two time slots in every calendar year.
  • Women in Science : The issue of under representation of women in science is being seen with a great deal of concern all over the world. "Women in Science" (WiS), was formed in January 2005 to study the current status with regard to women in science in the Indian context; the factors influencing the science career for Indian women; and to suggest recommendations. Several initiatives have been taken up in this regard.

Publications of the Academy

Scientific Journals of IAS

Publication of scientific journals has been a major activity of the Academy since its formation in 1934 and the Proceedings of the Indian Academy of Sciences Part A and Part B began publication the same year.

In 1978, the Proceedings split into several themes such as Proceedings – Mathematical Sciences, Sadhana – Academy Proceedings in Engineering Sciences, Journal of Chemical Sciences, Journal of Earth System Science, and Journal of Biosciences. (there have been revisions to the journal names in the intervening years).

In 1985, the Academy took over publication of the Journal of Genetics, which is among the oldest English language journals in genetics, having been founded in 1910.

Journals that have been launched since then include Pramana – Journal of Physics in 1973, Bulletin of Materials Science in 1979, Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy in 1980, and Resonance – Journal of Science Education.

The Academy also publishes two online-only journals – the Indian Academy of Sciences Conference Series (first online in December 2017) and DIALOGUE: Science, Scientists, and Society (first online in January 2018).
