According to the Resolution constituting the AEC, the Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Atomic Energy is ex-officio Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. DAE has been engaged in the development of nuclear power technology, applications of radiation technologies in the fields of agriculture, medicine, industry and basic research.
The vision of the Department of Atomic Energy is to empower India through technology, creation of more wealth and providing better quality of life to its citizen. This is to be achieved by making India energy independent, contributing to provision of sufficient, safe and nutritious food and better health care to our people through development and deployment of nuclear and radiation technologies and their applications.
The Department is engaged in the design, construction and operation of nuclear power / research reactors and the supporting nuclear fuel cycle technologies covering exploration, mining and processing of nuclear minerals, production of heavy water, nuclear fuel fabrication, fuel reprocessing and nuclear waste management. It is also developing advanced technologies which contribute to the national prosperity. The human resource developed and technical services being rendered by the Department have been greatly helping the Indian industry.
The Department is also developing better crop varieties, techniques for control/eradication of insects thus protecting the crops, radiation based post-harvest technologies, radiation based techniques for diagnosis and therapy of disease particularly cancer, technologies for safe drinking water, better environment and robust industry.

DAE - RR Fellow (RRF)
Department of Atomic Energy is pursuing a national level fellowship scheme known as “Raja Ramanna Fellowship”. The scheme is intended to utilize the services of active retired scientists, engineers and technologists, who have been involved in high quality research in their specialized disciplines in the units of the DAE or any National Laboratory or University or Institute and who after retirement are keen to carry out R&D in the field of their choice and of interest to the DAE. The scheme was started as ‘DAE-BRNS Senior Scientists Scheme’ in the year 2000. It was rechristened as “Raja Rammana Fellowship Scheme” in the year 2005 after the death of former chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary to Department of Atomic Energy, Dr. Raja Ramanna.
Homi Bhabha Chair
In order to give recognition and an opportunity to outstanding Scientists and Engineers including those retired/superannuated scientists/engineers who were involved in the development of sensitive and/or critical technologies to carry out research and development work in the fields of their choice and of interest to the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), there shall be a Scheme known as the “DAE - Homi Bhabha Chair for Distinguished Scientists /Professors”. The tenure of the incumbents of the DAE Homi Bhabha Chair for the Distinguished Scientists / Professors shall be for a period of one to five years at the discretion of the Selection Committee.
DAE-Young Scientist’s Research Award (YSRA)
The main objective of the scheme is to encourage young scientists in the initial years of settling down in their career. Highly qualified young scientists are provided with the necessary grants for research in setting up their first laboratories. The scheme is particularly aimed at NRI scientists willing to return to the country. This scheme known as DAE Young Scientist Research Award (DAE-YSRA) is applicable to only scientists below the age of 35 years.
DAE-Scientific Research Council (DAE-SRC) Award
DAE Science Research Council (DAE SRC) is a body consisting of eminent scientists and has been setup to guide basic research being done in the units of DAE. The DAE SRC proposes to set up Frontier Area Research Units around outstanding individuals in order to impart a fresh momentum to advanced research in the areas of science and engineering of interest to DAE. Each Unit will be initially supported for a period of five years.
