S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS) is an autonomous research institute established under Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India in 1986 as a Registered Society. The Centre was established to honour the life and work of Professor S. N. Bose who was colossal in theoretical physics and has made some of the most fundamental conceptual contributions in the development of Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Statistics.
SNBNCBS has emerged as a major institution for research and development in Basic Sciences, specifically in the area of physical sciences and related disciplines. The Centre, while focusing on basic research, has also made a new move to contribute in application driven basic research, in particular, in areas of national needs. Situated on a 15 acre lush-green picturesque campus in Salt Lake, the Centre is engaged in basic research (theoretical, computational and experimental) in selected areas of Physical and Chemical Sciences including Theoretical Sciences, Astrophysics and Cosmology, Condensed Matter Physics and Material Sciences, Nanosciences and Chemical and Biological Physics. The Centre is also a major hub of advanced manpower training and linkage in this crucial area of Science and Technology. The Centre offers residential programme leading to PhD and has a vigorous visitors & linkage programme.
The objectives for which the S. N. Bose National Centre is established are:
Integrated PhD Programme
The programme is done in collaboration with the University of Calcutta. B.Sc. Physics and Mathematics (or as to be declared from time to time) students are eligible to apply. Intake is through the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST)/National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE). Selected/Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview based on their result in Bose Test and/or JEST score and/or NGPE rank.
PhD Programmes
SNBNCBS offers PhD in Physical Sciences and Chemical Sciences. M.Sc. Physics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, Biophysics or Biochemistry students are eligible to apply. Intake through Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST)/CSIR NET-JRF/Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) qualification. Selected/shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview based on JEST Score/UGC/CSIR NET-JRF/GATE percentile.
Project Research Programmes
B.Tech./M.Tech./M.Sc. students willing to do project research (dissertation work) at SNBNCBS can apply to the Dean (Academic Programme) along with the recommendation from the Head of the Institute.
