Ministry of Power has launched the Gram Ujala scheme during March 2021 to provide affordable and high-quality LEDs to the rural population.
Each rural household can get high quality 7-Watt and 12-Watt LED bulbs with 3 years guarantee at a cost of INR 10 per bulb in exchange of working incandescent bulbs. Every household can exchange a maximum of 5 bulbs.
These rural households will also have meters installed in their houses to monitor numbers of hours of usage. Carbon credits will be prepared under the Shine Program of Activities with an option for verifying under the Voluntary Carbon Standard, depending on the needs of buyers.
The scheme targets to distribute 10 million LED bulbs under Project Crore in 2 million rural households till March 31, 2022 in the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana.
The programme is financed entirely through carbon credits. Under the United Nations’ Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), the scheme will claim carbon credits.
Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), a subsidiary of state-owned Energy Efficiency Services Limited, a joint venture of public sector companies under the Ministry of Power, Government of India is the implementation agency.
