Causes
Sinuses are moist air spaces within the bones of the face around the nose. Sinuses are lined with the same mucous membranes that line the nose and mouth.
When a person has cold and allergies, the sinus tissues make more mucous and become swollen. The drainage system for the sinuses gets blocked and mucous can become trapped in these sinuses. Bacteria, fungi, and viruses can grow there and cause sinusitis
Symptoms
Sinusitis can cause different symptoms to people of varying ages.
- Children typically have cold-like symptoms, including stuffy or runny nose and slight fever. When a child develops a fever around the third or fourth day after cold symptoms began, it could signal sinusitis or some other type of infection, like bronchitis, pneumonia, or an ear infection.
- In adults, the most frequent symptoms of sinusitis are a daytime dry cough that doesn’t reduce even after the first 7 days of the cold symptoms, fever, worsening congestion, dental pain, ear pain, or tenderness in the face. The other symptoms observed are stomach upsets, nausea, headaches and pain behind their eyes..
Simple tips for management
- Sinusitis is common and can be easily treated. When a child has cold and the symptoms are present even after 10 days or if the child develops fever after about 7 days of having cold symptoms, take the child to the doctor for treatment
- Keep your surroundings clean and try to avoid situations/allergens that that cause sinusitis in you.
