National Healthcare Innovations Portal (NHInP)

The National Healthcare Innovations Portal (NHInP) is an attempt to pool-in and showcase innovative program designs, practices, technology solutions and products across the public and private healthcare sector of India. These solutions have either demonstrated abilities to address health systems challenges in specific contexts or hold a promise for the future. This platform will act as an inspiration to health entrepreneurs as well as provide newer program designs, devices and approaches to cover those in the greatest need of healthcare.

NHInP Portal

National Health Innovation Portal (NHInP) is being launched to serve as a platform in public domain to facilitate collection and dissemination of good practices and innovations that are found to be replicable. This portal would serve as a gateway for integrating innovations into mainstream healthcare and has the potential to bring about transformative improvements in healthcare delivery by accelerating the uptake of successful innovations of products, processes and programs.

An individual, a government organization working in the area of health, private institution (for-profit/not for profit) providing clinical care or non-clinical care, academic institution, an autonomous institution, a research organization (public/private), pharma sector, or associated in producing healthcare devices can submit an innovation.

The value of an innovation would be judged on the criteria of strength of evidence, scale of coverage, impact (including equity impact) and potential for scalability and replicability.

Every year, a batch of 5 innovations deemed fit by the committee would be selected out of all innovations approved by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) for upscaling. The innovators shall be engaged at appropriate levels with the help from the National Health System Resources Centre (NHSRC) for helping states to uptake these innovations.

Areas of Innovation

Broadly, the innovations would be either program innovations or product innovations. However, specific drugs, surgical or medical procedures or practices that need evaluation through randomized controlled trials/or systematic reviews/or meta-analysis would not be considered.

Program Innovations

Several program innovations are existing or are facilitated at various levels of healthcare delivery as a response to a specific problem, program need or to achieve a better level of performance. Such innovations may range from a better referral system, new and efficient ways of treatment compliance, new mechanisms to reduce cost of care or out of pocket expenditure etc. This may also include innovations in service delivery, financing and governance.

Product Innovations

Health products including medical devices, innovative technologies including healthcare IT, m-health, and tele-health/e-health form a bulk of product innovations. New vaccines and drugs follow other regulatory routes and usually get well-identified and incorporated. However, medical technology innovations tend to remain unidentified due to inadequate systems support.

Criteria for Submission

Program Innovations

Within the National Health Mission (NHM), programmatic innovations have been encouraged at various levels of healthcare delivery as a response to a specific problem to achieve improved health outcomes. Such innovations may range from a better referral system, new and efficient ways of treatment compliance, mechanisms to reduce cost of care/out of pocket expenditure. This would span innovations in service delivery, financing and governance.

Product Innovations

Product innovations form a different section of the ecosystem for innovations. Health products including medical devices, health care IT, new vaccines and drugs are critical to improve health services and population health outcome.

Inclusion Criteria

  • Relevant to existing healthcare needs of the population especially for those who are disadvantaged and marginalized
  • Address locally endemic health problems and or diseases
  • Facilitate better health care reach to people in terms of accessibility (geographies and population), affordability including potential to reduce cost of care, quality encompassing of patient safety and equity
  • Bridge a crucial specialized skill gap required in delivery of health services
  • Demonstrate, effective health outcomes
  • Evidence of scalability into the large scale health systems

Details required to be submitted:

  • Need/rationale
  • Description of the model
  • Human resources (existing and/or new)
  • Capacity building strategies, if applicable
  • Evidence of effectiveness
  • Cost
  • Summary of lessons and challenges
  • Potential for scale
  • Partners involved in implementation
