National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research

National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research

National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research, Bengaluru, an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) institution, is one of its kind of unique institution which utilizes information science for health research as its integral component.

Broad Objectives

The main broad and overall objective of the centre is to sustain and develop a national research data-base on cancer, diabetes,  Cardio Vascular Diseases (CVD) and stroke through recent advances in electronic information technology with a national collaborative network, so as to undertake aetiological, epidemiological, clinical and control research in these areas.

Thematic areas and its publications

Cancer

  1. Population Based Cancer Registries (PBCRs)
    • Population Based Cancer Registries systematically collect data on all new cases of cancer occurring in a well defined population from multiple sources such as Government Hospitals, Private Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Clinics, Diagnostic Labs, Imaging centres, Hospices and Registrars of Births & Deaths. The coverage is about 10% of the population of India.
    • Perhaps PBCR is the only source which provides authentic data on incidence and mortality of cancer in various parts of the nation for a defined period. As heredity and environment remain the two major determinants of cancer, understanding of wide geopathological variation in a country like India is almost imperative in order to address the problem of cancer. Here lies the importance of PBCR data.
  2. Hospital Based Cancer Registry (HBCR)
    • The main objective of HBCRDM software is to capture the cancer patient’s identifying, diagnostic and treatment information registered in the hospital. Centres have been provided with the login ID, password and the printed core forms. The centres are collecting and transmitting the data. Quality check report on data could be generated by the centres as well by the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP). Updates and corrections of the data can be performed online.
  3. Patterns of Care and Survival Studies (POCSS)
    • To obtain the details of clinical stage and types of treatment in the Hospital Based Cancer Registries under the NCRP and in other selected centres and medical colleges across the country;
    • To obtain clinical stage and treatment based survival in all registered and treated patients at these centres;
  4. Development of an Atlas of Cancer in India
     A project of the National Cancer Registry Programme (Indian Council of Medical Research). The main objectives of the project are:
    • To obtain an overview of patterns of cancer in different parts of the country ;
    • To calculate estimates of cancer incidence wherever feasible.

Stroke

National Stroke Registry Programme

The ICMR-National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (NCDIR) has initiated the National Stroke Registry Programme to facilitate and support programmes of surveillance of stroke.

The objectives of the National Stroke Registry Programme are :
1. To generate reliable data on the magnitude and incidence of stroke;
2. To know the patterns of care in patients with stroke.

The NSRP shall use electronic information systems for data collation, processing and analysis in bringing out periodic reports on the magnitude of stroke and patterns of stroke care in India through Population and Hospital based Registries. This would lay a strong foundation for epidemiological, clinical and public health research in stroke in our country.

National NCD Monitoring Survey

The National Non-communicable Disease Monitoring Survey (NNMS) conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) - National Center for Disease
Informatics & Research (NCDIR), Bengaluru, Government of India with the support of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India will assesses the national NCD targets and indicators.
