Guledgudd Khana

Background

Guledgudd is a cluster of villages in Badami taluk of Bagalkot district of Karnataka State. Guledgudd is around 24 Km from Badami and 457 Km from Bangaluru. When some emigrants came and settled by the side of a hill, it began to be called as Guledgudd, meaning Emigrants Hill. The Choli (Khana or Blouse) cloth manufactured at this place, popularly known as GuledguddKhana, is very famous and in great demand. The traditional GuledguddKhana (or fabric for Choli or Blouse) compliments the IIkal Sarees as this combination is widely used not only in the northern part of Karnataka but also in Marathawada and Vidarbha regions of Maharashtra. The IIkal Sarees and GuledguddKhana in their best combinations are used extensively in Urban and Rural parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Material used

The basic raw material of the product is Mulbery Silk and Cotton yarn, procured in the form of hank. While silk yarn is procured from the traders of Ramanagaram and Bangalore, the Cotton yarn is sourced from the spinning mills of Tamil Nadu especially from Coimbatore and surrounding places.

Techniques applied

The handlooms are either pit looms or frame looms. The handlooms are made up of wood. As small geometrical designs are woven to these materials, it requires dobby mechanism for lifting of extra warp design threads.

How to distinguish genuine Guledgudd Khana

• The speciality of this material is its unique design and the raw material. Most of the raw materials used are degummed soft Silk in warp and Cotton in weft.
• The small design motifs produced in these Khana fabrics are the specialty of these products. These designs are produced by using extra threads. The motifs appear bolder and enhance the attractiveness of the fabrics.
• Feel of the fabric is soft and it looks glossy due to use of silk in the warp.
