Tuirial river originates from north Chawilung hill in Aizawl district and flows northward till it enters Cachar district of Assam. It also formed the district boundary between Kolasib and Aizawl district in the eastern side. Important perennial streams like Lugndai lui, Tuisen lui, Keitum lui, Tuiritai lui and Hachhe lui join Tuirial river before it confluent to Barak river in Cachar district of Assam.
The catchment area is about 1861 sq. km with an annual rainfall of 2540 mm.
Tuirial H.E. Project is envisaged as a medium head storage scheme with an installed capacity of 60 MW (2 x 30 MW). The Project develops the lowest possible stage of Tuirial river system and is located in the Aizawl district of Mizoram adjoining Cachar district of Assam. The annual energy generation from the Project is estimated to be 250.63 Million Units in a 90 percent dependable year. The Project has been built at a cost of Rs.1302 crore.
It is the biggest power project located in Mizoram. The State's current demand of electricity is only 87 MW and this is being met by State's mini power projects and availability of its share of power from central sector projects. With the additional 60 MW of electricity from the project, the State of Mizoram will now be the third power-surplus State in North East India after Sikkim and Tripura. Apart from attaining self-sufficiency in electric power, the project will fetch other spin-off benefits to the State of Mizoram like employment generation, navigation, water supply, pisciculture and wild life conservation, tourism etc.
The project is being managed by the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd.
